Inside the Basket: Veronica Vertrees, Pilot

At 17, Veronica Vertrees may have been one of the youngest pilots to take flight at this year's Balloon Fiesta, but she was no newcomer to the world of ballooning. Taking time between homework assignments and college applications, Veronica shares how she became involved and what it's like to pilot a hot air balloon in this month’s Inside the Basket.

Early unmanned hot air balloons were used in China. Zhuge Liang of the Shu Han kingdom, during the Three Kingdoms era (220–280 AD), used airborne lanterns for military signaling. These lanterns are known as Kongming lanterns ( simplified Chinese : 孔明灯 ; traditional Chinese : 孔明燈 ). [4]

Here’s an oldie but goodie! Two Balloonapalooza models get goofy for the camera. First they inflate small water balloons at the sink, and then they head outside for a water balloon fight. The fun is followed up with an interview about the shoot. This video was filmed in 2000!

A balloon is different from an airship . An airship is a floating aircraft that has an engine and can change its direction of movement. A balloon has no engine and has no way to change its direction of movement (except up and down). A balloon travels by moving with the wind .
