Vanessa cardui is a well-known colourful butterfly , known as the painted lady , or in North America as the cosmopolitan . This butterfly has a strange pattern of flying in a sort of screw shape.

This species is a migrant to our shores and, in some years, the migration can be spectacular. The most-recent spectacle, in 2009, is considered to be one of the greatest migrations ever, with sightings from all over the British Isles that are definitely on a par with previous cardui years.

Watching a butterfly emerge from its chrysalis is enough to evoke wonder even from the most world-weary of souls. But rarely do we get to see behind the scenes of the pupa’s transformation. Current methods rely on dissection of the chrysalis, or at best, staining the critter (thereby killing it) and using X-rays to look inside.

Not everything runs on springs and gears in these modern times. Some chap named Tesla has been fooling about with ‘currents’ and ‘magnets’. I don’t claim to understand how these work, nor do I understand how they are supposed to power these Long Vision goggles with their strange glass tube attached to the side.
