In 1906, conservationist Charles Alexander Sheldon conceived the idea of preserving the Denali region as a national park. He presented the plan to his co-members of the Boone and Crockett Club . Denali is 5½ hours from Anchorage  by car and 8 hours by the Alaska Railroad. From Fairbanks, it’s just 3 hours by car, and 4 hours by train. For more information, see our Anchorage to Denali , Seward to Denali , or Fairbanks to Denali advice pages.

Stay near the park entrance with easy access to dining, excursions, and activities, or venture deep inside the Park to stay at a Kantishna wilderness lodge at the end of the 90-mile Denali Park Road
